Moving a tracker to another vehicle

Replacing a ute or swapping vehicles between crews? You can move a tracker to another vehicle you own or lawfully operate. The FMM003 is a plug-in tracker, so the move itself takes minutes.

Moving a tracker doesn’t change its term. It keeps the same term it started with.

The important part is keeping the platform up to date. The platform links each tracker to a vehicle. If the tracker moves and the vehicle details don’t change, the new vehicle’s trips show up under the old vehicle’s name.

  • Check the new vehicle. It needs an OBD-II port. What the tracker can read from the vehicle — fuel level, real odometer, fault codes — depends on the make and model, so it may be different from the old vehicle. See Vehicle compatibility.
  • Selling or returning the old vehicle? Take the tracker out first. Don’t let it go with the vehicle.
  1. Turn the ignition off in the old vehicle.
  2. Unplug the extension cable from the OBD-II port, cut the cable ties, and take the tracker out together with its cable.
  3. Expect an unplug alert. That’s normal.
  4. Find the OBD-II port in the new vehicle. It’s usually under the dash on the driver’s side. The owner’s manual shows where.
  5. Plug the cable into the port and the tracker into the cable, firmly, with the ignition off. Tuck the tracker up under the dash and hold it in place with cable ties.
  6. Start the engine and drive for a few minutes.
  7. Update the vehicle details in the dashboard. Go to Asset Info, select the vehicle, and use Change Device Name on the Manage tab. Or tell us and we’ll do it for you.
  8. Check the dashboard. The vehicle should appear on the live map under its new name.

For more on fitting, see Installing the FMM003.

  • Check the odometer. The platform’s odometer may need adjusting to match the new vehicle’s dash. See Fuel and odometer.
  • Check groups and alerts. If the new vehicle belongs to a different crew or depot, update its group so the right alert rules apply.
  • Tell the driver. If someone new is driving a tracked vehicle, they need to know. See Tracking your staff.

Hardwired trackers are wired into the vehicle, so moving one is a job for an installer. Contact us to arrange it.

Changed vehicles? Moving the tracker keeps your plan running as normal. It’s usually better than cancelling, because cancelling a tracker early means paying out the rest of its term. See Plans and contracts.
